What exactly is a Dartblaster?

You ask yourself what makes a Dartblaster? Don’t worry, we’re here to let you know everything about the basics!

First of all we call everything a Dartblaster, that accelerates a foam projectile. In general, we mean toys like Nerf blasters, that shoot Nerf darts as ammunition. But there are also other types of ammunition.

Dartblaster Manufacturers

First, let’s give a brief overview of the most renowned manufacturers. The biggest and most prominent manufacturer is of course Hasbro.

Hasbro has been producing Nerf blasters (Non-Expanding Recreational Foam) for over 20 years now. During these years there have been several „series“ of Nerf blasters and various technical advances. The blasters of the recent years achieve much higher ranges and improved precision than 5 years ago.

Besides Hasbro, BuzzBee and Zuru are big brands for dartblasters in Germany. Just a few years ago, Nerf was the one and only market leader in terms of quality and performance, but now BuzzBee and Zuru are at least equal, sometimes they even have better range.

Aside these established brands there are still promising new releases like the CEDA from JET Blaster and various cheap blasters at discounters, which are sometimes good for a surprise, at times not very convincing out of the box.

The latest innovation on the market are Nerf’s Rival blasters and compatible competitor products that shoot about 18mm foam balls.

Unfortunately, none of these Nerf models have made it onto the German market yet. However, the latest efforts have led to the first compatible blasters being available in Germany: Dart Zone – Ballistix Ops Powerball Ballblaster

Let’s talk about actual blasters!

There are a variety of blaster that work in many different ways. There are several characteristics to take into consideration:

  • How is the dart accelerated?
  • How is the dart loaded into the Blaster?
  • How is the Blaster primed before triggering it?

The most important question in my opinion is how darts are accelerated. There are three main systems here:

  1. Spring pressure
  2. Air pressure tank
  3. Flywheel technology

Most blasters utilize spring pressure to propel darts. In order to do that a spring is tensioned and when it is released, a volume of air is pressed against the dart, accelerating it. The larger this air volume is and the faster it is moved, the bigger the performance potential of the blaster.

Compressed air is another very powerful system, but is produced less and less. A pressure tank is pumped up and the dart is then propelled with this decompressing air. Here the performance depends on the volume of the pressure tank, as well as the producible pressure.

Flywheel technology is currently on the advance. Here two flywheels are driven electrically, the dart is pushed between and accelerated by them. The efficiency of acceleration depends on how much energy is transferred from the flywheels to the dart. The primary factors are the flywheels, the motors, the casing in which everything is fixed, the so called cage, and the power source.

In conclusion it can be said that all systems have different variants and combinations with one another. In future blog entries, we will deal with the special characteristics of the respective systems.
