Changing the Spring – How to?

Here you can find out how to get more power out of your Blaster by simply swapping one spring for another.

Springs are literally the driving force in many blasters! If the blaster is not operated electrically or with an air tank, it is almost always a spring providing the force to accelerate the dart.

Since the spring is one of the most important factors in these spring-loaded blasters, it is often the easiest part to upgrade.

What exactly you have to do and should pay attention to is shown in the following example on your N-Strike Elite Alpha Trooper. Most of the spring loaded blasters with magazine are very similar and the ones without magazine are usually much easier. So the following explanation should be relatable to almost all spring-loaded blasters.

In order to perform a spring upgrade in a Blaster for the first time, the following things are needed.

1. the blaster you want to upgrade.
2. the right spring or kit.
3. a suitable screwdriver (PZ0).
4. (Optional) A sheet of paper or cardboard larger than the main body of the blaster, a pen and tape.

Step 1: Screw plan

We place the Blaster on the paper and draw along its contours. This does not have to happen very exactly, you just have to recognize the rough shape of the blaster.

We’ll now use the resulting drawing as a screw plan. Each screw which is removed from the Blaster to open it, is placed in the according position on the screw plan. This makes it possible to see exactly which screw belongs where. Most of the blaster screws are the same length nowadays, but sometimes shorter screws are used where the blaster’s shell is very slim.

Tips: If you want to keep the Blaster open longer, work in cramped conditions or just want to play it safe, you can fix the screws with tape for a short time or if you use cardboard you can put them through the cardboard. That way you can make sure you’ll neither lose nor mix them up.

Step 2: Open

When the screw plan is drawn, simply unscrew all screws from the shell of the blaster and put them on the screw plan at accordingly.

It is important to use a screwdriver that fits well into the screw heads. The screws in plastic toys are often not too robust and a ground out screw head is very annoying.

Tip: If the Blaster does not open despite loosened screws, there usually is still a screw hidden somewhere. Often you have to push moving parts, like the priming slide, into another position to discover a hidden screw. With Buzzbee blasters, depending on the generation, there may be some plastic covers clipped onto screws, which have to be levered off with a flat screwdriver.

For all, who want to disassemble their Blasters on a regular basis, I recommend the replacement screws from Blasterparts with Torx head.

Step 3: Replace spring

Now that the Blaster is opened up in front of you, the first thing you should do is pull out your smartphone and take a picture of the inside of the Blaster and the correct positions of all parts. This will help you to assemble the blaster later on.

Now the installation can begin. Depending on the blaster your working on, there is either only one spring or a complete kit. In kits, besides the actual spring, there are often things like a guiding shell, a catch spring and lately also lubricants. If you should go for a spring or the full kit depends on the blaster. When in doubt: If we offer a kit, we usually do that for a good reason.

In case of the N-Strike Elite Alpha Trooper in our example, it makes sense to use a kit. The guiding shell is inserted into the orange cap so that the bevelled end remains visible. After that the spring is replaced.

The catch spring is also replaced. It’s the small spring right on top if the catch. The catch is the orange frame that sits around the back of the mainspring and grips and holds the primed blaster until the trigger is pulled. BE CAREFUL! The catch spring is under constant tension on almost every Blaster and will try to escape into another dimension if you don’t pay attention when opening and replacing the main spring!

If you are interested in exactly how a Blaster works and what the upgrades do, you can learn more in our upcoming article: Spring Pressure.

Step 4: Assemble

After the spring has been replaced, the Blaster can be reassembled. The photos taken directly after opening the blaster should help to reassemble it correctly.

If a small orange part has fallen out while opening, possibly with a short wide spring, then it is usually the piece locking with attatchments on a NERF tactical rail.

Tips:

-If the position of parts is unclear, there are plenty of ways to find the solution.

1. Google for the keywords „Blastername + Internals“ should turn up pictures of the internals of nearly every Blaster and how everything fits together.
2. Youtube offers „How to disassemble“ videos on many blaster. They often show the exact position of the internals.
3. We regularly help people out at Blasted.de. We’re happy to assist you with any repairs on blasters.

  • Open carefully. In some Blasters small springs are eager to scatter parts all over the place and disappear forever. If one should do so, ball-point pens can usually provide replacement springs.
  • Have you read the instructions and are still not sure whether you can get it done? We do have a chat at Blasted.de, just chat us up – we’re happy to help!
  • Don’t panic! It’s easier than it looks.
