Basics: Spring Loaded Blasters

How does a spring-loaded Blaster work and what do I need to know?

There are technically two typical, widespread basic principles for spring-loaded blaster: The reverse plunger and the direct plunger.

Reverse Plunger – known from the pre elite period, less efficient

Direct Plunger – the Elite standard, much more efficient than its predecessor)

Both systems use a spring which is tensioned when the blaster is primed. The spring powers  a system to push the air out of the plunger when it is released, thus accelerating the dart. In reverse plungers, however, two tubes are pressed into each other and not all the air leaves the piston, while the direct plunger uses most of the air to accelerate the dart.

The space between the dart’s end and the plunger’s head which is not compressed is called dead space. The bigger the dead space, the more power is lost. For this reason, small blaster are often slightly stronger than large blasters. They have less dead space.

Otherwise the performance of these systems depends on the used volume of the plunger tube and the power provided by the spring. A direct plunger with the same specifications produces more power than a reverse plunger because it has less dead space.

Another important factor is how well the system’s seal is. While plunger tubes and quality of seal are usually more difficult to improve, a stronger spring can easily achieve a significant increase in performance.
